“MyHoustonLife, this is Tommy.”
“Hi Tommy. I’m with the Cooking Channel’s Eat St. We will be in Houston this weekend filming The Waffle Bus and would like to invite MyHoustonLife to join other Houston food bloggers on our set.”
“Wait. What? I’m going to be on TV?”
“Maybe. There will be a lot of people on set and we will film several interviews…”
“I’m gonna be on TV?!”
“Again, it is possible that you may appear in this episode of Eat St., it is not guaranteed. You will however be sampling the food from The Waffle Bus while you are on set with us.”
“I’m gonna eat waffles on TV?!?!”
[sigh] “Yes.”
“I like waffles.”
Okay, so I didn’t end up on television. This mug belongs behind a camera not in front of one. But we did bring along two of our most attractive MHL foodies for some camera time and as good as The Waffle Bus‘ food is, they were not shy about their on-screen chow downs. Nom nom nom!
I do like waffles. And I really like chicken and waffles. So when looking over The Waffle Bus’ menu, there was no waffling [ha!], I knew what I wanted… give me the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffle Sandwich! Chicken and Waffles, when done correctly, has that sensational mix of sweet and savory flavors perfectly paired with a crunchy texture. The mad-waffle-scientists of The Waffle Bus took this classic, turned it on its head, and spat out one tasty sandwich!
The chicken breast is nicely fried — sealing in all the juices — and is drizzled with an Ancho Chili Honey to add that traditional touch of sweetness. It’s then sandwiched between two crisp waffle half moons making for bite after bite of handheld chicken and waffles goodness.
The rest of The Waffle Bus’ menu follows largely the same format. Take two pieces of waffle — or waffle-fries — and stick various combinations of deliciousness between them!
Some of the other menu items we sampled were the Chicken and Waffle Fryders — pieces of chicken sandwiched by waffle fries — and the Nutella and Banana Sweet Waffle Sandwich.
So if you’v got a hankering for some waffles or are just looking for a sandwich that is a little out of the norm but totally delicious, get out to The Waffle Bus! Currently, they are setting up shop at the University Center on the campus of University of Houston for lunch service Monday through Friday. On the weekends you can find them off Westheimer at the BoConcept furniture store.
