With the holiday season fast approaching, it is important to take time out to help those in Houston who are less fortunate than us. Now it’s not to say volunteering should only be emphasized during the holidays — lending a hand to our fellow man should be a year-round occurrence — but its natural to feel the tugs of generosity as the weather cools. From a personal standpoint, I know that I have found myself wanting to volunteer my time and energy but am frequently unaware of the opportunities to do so. Many times we want to help out but are either too lazy or too “busy” to seek out the opportunities to do so. Luckily for you this Thanksgiving holiday, MHL has done the research for you!
27th Annual Waste Management SuperFeast
The first of the two major food distributions is the 27th Annual Waste Management SuperFeast held on the grounds of Houston City Hall. In addition to serving dinners, there will also be a blankets and winter clothing drive and distribution. Volunteers are needed for set-up, preparation, serving food, and running festivities. Shifts run from 5AM to 8AM, 8AM to 11AM, and 11AM to 2PM. For more information visit their website and fill out this form to register.
33rd Annual Thanksgiving Big Feast
The Thanksgiving Big Feast at the George R. Brown Convention Center is the other major food distribution event on Thanksgiving Day in Downtown. Each year over 35,000 people are served Thanksgiving dinner, so they are definitely in need of volunteers. The dinner is organized by the City Wide Club and information about volunteering can be found on their website.
19th Annual TXU Energy Turkey Trot
The 19th Annual TXU Turkey Trot is a 10K, 5K and Kids Run that benefits the Sheltering Arms Senior Services. The event takes place on the Thanksgiving morning in front of the Galleria Dillards. To help this initiative, you can either participate in the run, sign up to pass out promotional packets or sign up to be a volunteer at the race. Race volunteers will need to be available as early as 6AM. For more information, visit their website here.
22nd Annual Houston Meals for the Elderly Program (Meals on Wheels)
Volunteer to deliver Thanksgiving meals to seniors who receive Meals on Wheels on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteer with the Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston and give both your time and your wheels to the greater good. Meals will be picked up from the First Presbyterian Church on Main Street from 10-11AM. To register to be a volunteer, fill out this form.
This is only a few of the numerous opportunities to lend a helping hand around the city of Houston on Thanksgiving Day. Since the holidays are a very popular time for people to get out and volunteer, be sure to register for the event you’re interested as soon as possible! If you know of any additional events that will be needing volunteers let us know and we will add it to this list!
